"Sweet Honey In The Rock" - ASL Interpreted Honey — an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock — an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. The metaphor of “sweet honey in the rock” captures completely these African American women singers whose repertoire is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, the clarion calls of the Civil Rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere. Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 at the DC Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey’s collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, comes in song to communities across the US and around the world, raising their voices in hope, love, justice, peace, and resistance. 8pm University of Michigan - Hill Auditorium Ann Arbor, MI For more information: (734) 764–2538 http://www.ums.org |

"Master the NIC" Workshop Presenter: Shonna M. Pareja, NIC: Master, CI & CT, OTC Fri, 6/5 or Mon, 6/8: Master the NIC: Written This workshop is for anyone studying for the NIC or any other written exam. If you’re like most people studying for the written, you read the recommended materials, but it’s hard to remember the info! The question isn’t “What are you studying?” it’s “HOW are you studying?” According to research, if you’re just reading the books, you are only retaining 10% of the information. Come join us, study with us, and learn how to retain 90 percent! (.8 CEUs in the PS area.) Sat, 6/6 & Sun, 6/7: Master the NIC: Interview This workshop is for those preparing for the NIC Performance. It can also be very beneficial for any interpreter needing training on the Code of Professional Conduct. The only difference between a NIC: Advanced and a NIC: Master is the interview. The interview has been viewed as the hardest part of the test. Do you know some interpreters with phenomenal skills who have actually failed the test? The interview could very well be the reason why! When answering ethical dilemmas, we may know what to do but how do we answer on the test in order to get the maximum points? Come find out! Come learn to be a Master from a Master. You will be taught proven methods to help you ace the interview portion of the performance! Many interpreters who have learned this format have gone on to receive HIGH ratings on the NIC. Many have been awarded a NIC: Master. Join us for this learning event that you'll be talking about long after it's over. "Signs of the Time" Documentary The feature-length baseball documentary, Signs of the Time, has been selected for its Michigan premiere on Thursday August 27th as part of the 1st Annual Grand Rapids Film Festival. The screening will be held at the Celebration Cinema North Theater at 8:00pm. The filmmakers will be in attendance immediately following the screening to answer questions. For more information visit: www.grfilmfestival.com Where did baseball hand signals come from? In exploring this seemingly simple question, the feature-length documentary, Signs of the Time, unveils stories of inspiration and controversy that transcend sports. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss, the film introduces two men at the center of this controversy and investigates our need to overcome barriers of communication with those around us. One was a trailblazing umpire whose dedication and ingenuity landed him in the Hall of Fame. The other, a player who overcame barriers of communication becoming the most celebrated deaf player in the history of Major League baseball. Signs of the Time is sure to delight baseball fans of all ages exploring our need to interact with those around us even in the face of adversity.
