MIRID VI Meeting & Workshop
Hosted by MIRID-VI
Meeting/Workshop
11:00 am - Meeting (doors open at 10:30am)
12:00 noon - Workshop with Rose Gelushia

Rose Gelushia will present on skill building. Rose attended the Lansing Community College ITP from 1997-1999. She has been called a rarity for the ASL skills that she acquired, only beginning late in her 4th decade of life. At her second attempt of the QA she achieved a III and has remained at the level ever since. She currently freelances in the Muskegon and Grand Rapids area, as well as interpreting in the college setting. If all that is not enough, she has in the past served as the secretary to her local chapter WMIRID.

During the skill building workshop Rose plans on discussing receptive skills. She has a few wonderful stories to sign/tell and maybe a little quiz afterward (hint, hint). She also has some visual games to play and challenge, as in: Was that your right or my right? Who's left is it? Did you mean you left the room using which door? Did you travel to California first and then to Missouri or was it Maine and Kentucky? General receptive/perspective issues that constantly challenges interpreters when they are trying to voice for a client.

It is free event for all!

IRID Interpreter Workshop - Foundations I and II!
Presented by: Betty Colonomos

Participants will...
- learn how to improve conveyance of equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities. This includes aspects not often considered while interpreting that can greatly enhance message equivalence.

- work on processing skills in small-group formats (pairs and triads) and develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes in a low stress, highly interactive environment.

- learn non-evaluative and specific language skills to facilitate discussion of the interpreting task with each other.

- be exposed to strategies for continuing their own improvement.

- focus on aspects of the Colonomos process model.

These workshops are suitable for certified interpreters, working interpreters, and interpreting students with adequate receptive skills.

Foundations I focuses on sign to voice.
Foundations II focuses on voice to sign.
