MIRID VI Meeting & Workshop Hosted by MIRID-VI Meeting/Workshop 11:00 am - Meeting (doors open at 10:30am) 12:00 noon - Workshop with Rose Gelushia Rose Gelushia will present on skill building. Rose attended the Lansing Community College ITP from 1997-1999. She has been called a rarity for the ASL skills that she acquired, only beginning late in her 4th decade of life. At her second attempt of the QA she achieved a III and has remained at the level ever since. She currently freelances in the Muskegon and Grand Rapids area, as well as interpreting in the college setting. If all that is not enough, she has in the past served as the secretary to her local chapter WMIRID. During the skill building workshop Rose plans on discussing receptive skills. She has a few wonderful stories to sign/tell and maybe a little quiz afterward (hint, hint). She also has some visual games to play and challenge, as in: Was that your right or my right? Who's left is it? Did you mean you left the room using which door? Did you travel to California first and then to Missouri or was it Maine and Kentucky? General receptive/perspective issues that constantly challenges interpreters when they are trying to voice for a client. It is free event for all! | 5/17/08 | Eucational Workshop: "Deafhood: People of the Eye - Community of Vision" Presenter: Ella Mae Lentz George Veditz, a Deaf Sign Language activitst in early 1900's said "Deaf people are first and foremost people of the eye...," not people of deficit (hearing loss). The 21st century is bringing giant leaps in science and technology bringing the Deaf community better quality of life as well as potential for extinction. The Book of Proverbs says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." What should the vision be for the people of the eye that will sustain our existence? This presentation emphasizes the need to move away from the deficit model of "deafness" and "hearing loss" towards the Deafhood model that celebrates our gifts and contributions to create our vision. A possible vision that originated in a letter by California Association of the Deaf will be broken down and elaborated. This vision includes an ideal view of "deaf," the use of American Sign Language for academic excellence, dealing with Deaf-related concerns, divisions and diversity, and consideration for future generations. 1pm - 4pm Kalamazoo Valley Community College Auditorium Kalamazoo, MI Please RSVP by May 11th to Liz at the email address below as they need head count so they will be providing free food: mini croissant sandwiches, brownies coffee, tea, ice water and pop at the workshop. MIRID Fall Conference "Making your Interpretation Sound Like A Source Presentation" Presented by: Carolyn Ressler, MA, NIC Master, SC:L, CI/CT What makes an interpretation sound like naturally produced speech? As interpreters we often focus on issues of message equivalency and content accuracy in ASL to English interpretations while not thinking about to the naturalness of our English product. To do this, participants will be guided through a process of understanding the situational factors that impact a communication event. Various tools and strategies will be explained that allow for a natural spoken English delivery. Issues of prosody, speaker background, situational context, register, speaker and audience goals will be examined. Common and predictable phrases and communication contexts will be identifi ed and pre-determined equivalent scripts will be discussed and developed. Strategies for making repairs in the English interpretation sound natural and mid-interpretation repair strategies will also be discussed. Tips and tricks of the trade will be shared and practiced in guided hands-on (voices-on!) activities. Come ready to learn some new theories, approaches and then put them into immediate practice in a safe learning environment. 8:30am to 5:00pm Kalamazoo Valley Community College Texas Township Campus Lower Level Room 8580 6767 West O Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49009 Cost: $60 Members/$40 Students/$80 at door For more information: http://www.mirid.org |

| 11/21/08 | Free Concert! Sponsored by MPowered, UM School of Music and D-PAN Joel Martin, entrepreneur and founder of D-PAN, is best known for discovering and producing Eminem. The Feel the Music Concert is a unique event in that it will bridge the gap between the deaf/hearing-impaired, the entertainment industry, and the public community. We will incorporate some really neat technology tha t allows the audience to "Feel" the music (along with hearing it). D-PAN pushes what music is and how it can be defined. Please publicize this event to any students who would have interest in coming. This undoubtedly is not only a GREAT social event, but an excellent opportunity for students in the deaf/hard-of-hearing community to enjoy music. 7pm University of Michigan North Campus,The Duderstadt Library Video Studio and Central Collaboration Area, Center, main floor Map: http://www.dc.umich.edu/hoursmaps/floor1/floorplan1.html The Video Studio is room 18 on the map.
