MIRID VI Workshop Hosted by MIRID-VI Meeting/Workshop Presenter: Diana McKittrick Diana McKittrick, MSDB Outreach SCPI Coordinator will present on Saturday, January 20th. She will be discussing the SCPI evaluation and how it can benefit interpreters. The SCPI assessment is currently used in different schools for the deaf, organizations, governmental entities and agencies throughout the nation to assess ASL/sign language proficiency of their staff, students and consumers. SCPI has been a tool used in Michigan since 1989 by the Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) to assess the sign communication skills of all MSD employees working for the school. Several years later, the school in response to the need and requests from outside of the school system, the Community SCPI program was created. This was (or potential employees) to ensure effective communication when interacting with deaf and hard of hearing individuals. In 2002, the SCPI program was transferred under Low Incidence Outreach with services provided to educational systems. Time: 10:30am - Welcome 11:00am - Meeting 12:00pm - Presentation Free to all Tri-City Association of the Deaf Club 3520 Schust Rd Saginaw, MI 48620 For more information: Joan M. “Using Prosody in ASL” - Spring Workshop Sponsored by MIRID, DODHH & LCC Sign Language Dept. Presented by Byron Bridges Workshop Description: Prosody is the combination of features in any language that produces the rhythm, accent, and “feel” of the language. In ASL, prosody is a visual-spatial image, created by several features. These features include head and body movements, eyebrow movement, mouth movement, speed of signing, sign formation, pacing, and pausing. These features are often very difficult for interpreters to master. As interpreters, we can improve ourselves in this area through selective watching and shadowing techniques. Once interpreters have overtly learned about prosodic features in ASL, they are more able to recognize and use them when they go out and mingle with the Deaf community, thus becoming more well-rounded. 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Lansing Community College Health & Human Services Building Conference Room 006 Map to LCC Costs: $45 members, $35 students, $55 Non-members & at door.
