MIRID VI Workshop
Hosted by MIRID-VI
Meeting/Workshop
Presenter: Diana McKittrick

Diana McKittrick, MSDB Outreach SCPI Coordinator will present on Saturday, January 20th. She will be discussing the SCPI evaluation and how it can benefit interpreters. The SCPI assessment is currently used in different schools for the deaf, organizations, governmental entities and agencies throughout the nation to assess ASL/sign language proficiency of their staff, students and consumers. SCPI has been a tool used in Michigan since 1989 by the Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) to assess the sign communication skills of all MSD employees working for the school. Several years later, the school in response to the need and requests from outside of the school system, the Community SCPI program was created. This was (or potential employees) to ensure effective communication when interacting with deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

In 2002, the SCPI program was transferred under Low Incidence Outreach with services provided to educational systems.

PBS documentary explores 200 years of deaf life in America
“Through Deaf Eyes,” a two-hour PBS documentary exploring nearly 200 years of Deaf life in America, will air early next year. The film was inspired by the exhibition, “History Through Deaf Eyes,” curated by Jack R. Gannon of Gallaudet University.

The documentary will air nationally on PBS on Wednesday, March 21 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings).

The film presents the shared experiences of American history -- family life, education, work, and community connections -- from the perspective of deaf citizens. Interviews include community leaders, historians, and deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology and identity.

MIRID Logo
“Using Prosody in ASL” - Spring Workshop
Sponsored by MIRID, DODHH & LCC Sign Language Dept.

Presented by Byron Bridges
Workshop Description:
Prosody is the combination of features in any language that produces the rhythm, accent, and “feel” of the language. In ASL, prosody is a visual-spatial image, created by several features. These features include head and body movements, eyebrow movement, mouth movement, speed of signing, sign formation, pacing, and pausing. These features are often very difficult for interpreters to master. As interpreters, we can improve ourselves in this area through selective watching and shadowing techniques. Once interpreters have overtly learned about prosodic features in ASL, they are more able to recognize and use them when they go out and mingle with the Deaf community, thus becoming more well-rounded.

“Navigating Discourse Genres”
Presented by: Micki Baumgart, CI and CT
Help kick off the re-activation of MIRID Local Chapter 2 in Imlay City!

Jump in and let the "voicing" river carry you down stream! Don't worry, it's not deep or cold or fast water! We can navigate together as the river twists and bends. This workshop will be totally self-paced, fun, and of course, there WILL be a lifeguard on duty! Relax and enjoy the scenery as we explore together what we know and what we can share.

The cost for this workshop is free for those who reside in MIRID Local Chapter 2. We are asking all other attendees to make a donation to help re-establish MIRID Local Chapter 2. A short business meeting will follow to discuss MIRID Local Chapter 2.

The Michigan premier of The Jellybean Conspiracy Show – Interpreted Performance

The Jenison High School Thespians present The Jellybean Conspiracy Show, featuring an anthology called “Voices from the Heart” and Linda Daughtery’s play “Dance with Me.”
Interpreted by: Rose Gelushia, professional sign language interpreter

The show is produced in partnership with The Jellybean Conspiracy: Theatre of Kindness, a not-for-profit agency that seeks to create theatre-based communities of caring that recognize the unique gifts of all young people, including those with developmental disabilities.

“Voices from the Heart” is a warm and affectionate anthology of music, song, poetry, dance, and mixed media, featuring original work by JHS students Mark Kleyn, Sam Trumble, Sommer Cain, Kate Carlisle, Colleen Veldt and Taylor Dombrowski. A quarter of the cast features students from the special education program at JHS.

The second act tells the story of a young woman, Cricket, played by senior, Hope Shangle, and her conflicted relationship with her beloved sibling who has Down syndrome, played by Louisa Graham. Despite troubles at home and at school, Cricket comes to realize her sister’s unique gifts and contributions to the world. The show has music, dance, and lively action and is suitable for the whole family.

The Jellybean Conspiracy features 30 JHS student actors and nearly 50 technical crew. The show is directed by Todd Avery. Additional information regarding the Jellybean Conspiracy Show and its’ Executive Director, Dr. Howard Martin, can be found at www.jellybeanconspiracy.org.

Michigan ASLTA Workshop
"WHOA! ASL NOW TARNISH?... TRUE?"
English version: Whoa! Is it true that ASL is losing its beauty?
Presenter: JaNahne (Jan) McCready
The workshop will outline a trend happening in recent years that ASL users have been copying incorrect ASL signs vocabulary and concepts; thus, spreading widely usage of incorrect ASL. To illustrate this point, the presenter will use comparison between ASL and English, point out incorrect sign vocabulary and emphasize the importance of analyzing the semantics of ASL.
